If Telstra, Optus, Vodafone or another home carrier is charging you roaming, your phone has been sending data through your home SIM instead of the Roamly eSIM. It’s a settings problem and it’s quick to fix.

Stop it now

1

Turn off Data Roaming on your home SIM

This is the one that stops the charges.
  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile → tap your home SIM (not Roamly) → Data Roaming off.
  • Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap your home SIM → Roaming off. (Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming.)
2

Make Roamly the data line

  • iPhone: Mobile → Mobile Data → choose your Roamly line. While you’re there, turn Allow Mobile Data Switching off so the phone can’t fall back to the home SIM.
  • Android: on the SIMs screen, tap Mobile data and choose Roamly.
3

Or switch the home SIM off entirely

The belt-and-braces option. Your number won’t receive calls or texts while it’s off, and it comes back exactly as it was when you turn it on at home.
  • iPhone: Mobile → your home SIM → Turn on this Line off.
  • Android: SIMs → your home SIM → Use this SIM off.

Why does this happen?

Phones with two SIMs pick a data line, and some will silently switch to the other one when the chosen line has no signal. If your home SIM has roaming on, that switch costs money. Roamly’s own Data Roaming switch is different: it’s on the Roamly line, it’s required, and it’s included in your plan price. See Data roaming: why it must be on for your Roamly line.

Before your next trip

Set this up before you board: home SIM roaming off, Roamly selected for data (or the home SIM off altogether). The app’s setup guide on your plan page walks through it.

Already been charged?

Those charges are between you and your carrier; we can’t see or reverse them. Most carriers will discuss a first-time roaming bill if you contact them, especially if the amount is small and you’ve fixed the settings.
