An eSIM can only be installed on one phone. That’s how eSIMs work everywhere, not a Roamly rule: the profile is tied to the hardware of the phone that downloads it. Here’s what that means in practice.

Before it’s installed, you choose the phone

Until the first install, the eSIM can go on any compatible phone: yours, or someone else’s. To put it on a phone other than the one you’re signed in on, show the QR code and scan it with that phone. See Install with a QR code (iPhone) or Android. Whichever phone scans it is where it lives.

After it’s installed, it stays put

  • A second phone or a tablet? They need their own plan.
  • New phone mid-trip? The eSIM can’t move to it. You’ll need a new plan for the new phone; buy and install it on Wi-Fi.
  • Deleted it from your phone? You can re-add it to the same phone from Installation details on the website or More → Technical in the app. See I deleted my eSIM, or installed it on the wrong phone.

Sharing data with other devices

You don’t need a second eSIM for a laptop or a travel buddy: turn on your phone’s hotspot. See Use your phone as a hotspot.

Several plans on one phone

The other way round works fine. A phone can hold several eSIMs, so you can keep a Japan plan and a Europe plan installed and switch between them in your SIM settings. Give each a clear name: see Rename your eSIM.
