If this is your first time using an eSIM with Roamly, here’s the shortest path from “what’s an eSIM?” to “connected at your destination.” Five steps, takes about five minutes of active time (most of which is just waiting for QR codes to scan).

Before you start

You’ll need:
  • An eSIM-compatible phone (check yours) — most phones from 2019 onwards
  • A Wi-Fi connection for the install (you can’t install over mobile data)
  • About 5 minutes at home before you travel

Step 1: Buy your plan

Go to onroamly.com/explore and pick a country or region. Plans start from $5 AUD.
  • Country plan — best for one destination (e.g. “Japan 5GB 30 days”)
  • Regional plan — best for multi-country trips (e.g. “Asia-Pacific” covering Japan, Thailand, Korea, etc.)
Not sure how much data you need? Most country pages have a Help me choose calculator that recommends a plan based on how you’ll use your phone. More on country vs regional plans →

Step 2: Install before you fly

Open your purchase confirmation email and tap the install link, or log in to My eSIMs on onroamly.com. Then follow the iPhone or Android install guide:

Install on iPhone

Tap “Add to iPhone” — takes ~30 seconds.

Install on Android

Scan the QR code from Settings → Connections.
Leave the eSIM toggled OFF after install. Most plans only start counting down when you first connect to a network at your destination.

Step 3: When you land — turn it on

Get off the plane, get through customs. Then:
  1. Go to Settings → Mobile (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Android)
  2. Find your Roamly eSIM and turn it on
  3. Enable Data Roaming on the Roamly line (this is normal — your home plan is unaffected)
  4. Set Roamly as your default for mobile data
Within a few seconds your phone will connect to a local network. You’re online.

Step 4: Use it

That’s it — your eSIM works like any other mobile data connection. Browse, message, navigate, use rideshare and translation apps. No different from being at home. Want to track your usage as you go? Check your data usage → Running low? Most plans support top-ups without buying a new eSIM.

Step 5: When you get home

Switch your default mobile data back to your primary line, and turn the Roamly eSIM off. Keep it installed in case you visit the same destination again.
