# My data is slow

> Usually congestion or a slower network, not the eSIM. What to try, and what speeds are normal.

Slow data is nearly always the local network — a crowded cell, a weak signal, or the phone sitting on an older network type — rather than anything about your plan. Here's what makes a difference.

## Things to try, quickest first

    On for ten seconds, then off. The phone reconnects and often lands on a faster cell or network.

    Even a few hundred metres, or stepping outside, can turn one bar into four. Busy tourist spots and stadiums are slow for everyone.

  <Step title="Try a different network">
    Your plan usually works on more than one local network, listed under **Coverage & networks** on your plan page. If the one you're on is crawling, [choose another by hand](/troubleshooting/settings/choose-a-network-manually).

  <Step title="Check what's using your data">
    Photo backups, app updates and cloud sync can quietly saturate the connection. Pause them while you're on the eSIM.

    The classic, because it works.

## Is my plan being slowed down?

No. Roamly plans don't throttle: you get whatever the local network gives you until your data runs out, and then the connection stops rather than slowing. If you're near the end of your allowance, check your plan page and [top up](/managing/top-up).

## What's normal?

Every plan lists the network types it supports (for example 4G/5G). What you actually get on the ground depends on the local network, where you're standing, the time of day and your phone. As a rough guide, 5G is tens to hundreds of megabits per second where it's available, 4G is comfortably enough for maps, video calls and streaming, and 3G (rare now, mostly rural) is enough for messaging and maps.
