# How to buy an eSIM plan

> Pick a destination, choose data and days, pay in AUD on the website or in the app. Your eSIM is ready to install within minutes.

Buying takes a couple of minutes on the website or in the app. You'll need a free Roamly account, which is where your eSIM lives afterwards.

    Each plan shows its data, how many days it's valid for, the network speeds it supports and whether it can be topped up. Not sure how much you need? See [How much data do I need?](/countries-and-plans/how-much-data)

    Tap **Buy Now**. If you're new, create an account with email, Google or Apple. At checkout you can enter a promo or referral code and apply any Roam Coins you have, then pay with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST where applicable.

    Your eSIM is usually ready within a minute or two and never more than five. We'll email you when it is. Install it on the phone you'll travel with: see [Installing your eSIM](/installing/before-you-install).

## When should I buy?

Any time before you fly. Installing takes a minute and the plan doesn't start until you connect at your destination, so there's no reason to leave it to the airport. Every plan has an activate-by date, shown on your plan page, so don't buy a year ahead either. See [When to buy, install and switch on](/getting-started/when-to-buy-install-and-switch-on).

## Buying for someone else

You can. Buy the plan from your account and install it on their phone with the QR code (**Install on another device** in the app, or **Scan QR code** on the website). The eSIM stays in your account, so you'll be the one who sees its usage and tops it up.

A neater option for a friend or family member with their own phone: send them your referral code instead. They get \$5 off their first order and you earn Roam Coins when it goes through. See [Refer a friend](/rewards/refer-a-friend).

## Do I have to use the app?

No. The website and the app do the same things. The app is handier on the road: one-tap install, live usage and the setup guides work offline. See [Get the Roamly app](/getting-started/get-the-app).
