# Does my phone support eSIM?

> Most phones since 2018 do. How to check in under a minute, the supported models, and why the phone must be carrier-unlocked.

Two things need to be true: your phone has to have an eSIM, and it has to be unlocked from your carrier. Here's how to check both.

## The one-minute check

    Go to **Settings → General → About**. If you see **Available SIM**, **Digital SIM** or an **EID** number, your iPhone has an eSIM. Every iPhone from the XS and XR onwards does, with one exception: iPhones bought in mainland China have no eSIM.

    Go to **Settings → Network & internet → SIMs** (Samsung: **Settings → Connections → SIM manager**). If there's an **Add eSIM** or **Download a SIM** option, you're set. If the option is missing, the phone either has no eSIM or is carrier-locked.

## Supported phones

* **Apple:** iPhone XS, XR and every later model, including SE (2nd generation onwards).
* **Google:** Pixel 3a and later.
* **Samsung:** Galaxy S20 and later, Note 20 and later, Z Flip and Z Fold, and recent A-series models. Not every A-series phone has an eSIM, so check the one-minute test.
* **Others:** recent models from OnePlus, Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi, Sony and Nothing. Support varies by model and by the country it was sold in.

## It has to be unlocked

A phone locked to a carrier can only use that carrier's SIMs. Some locked phones refuse to install a Roamly eSIM; others install it and then never connect. If your phone came on a plan, ask your carrier whether it's unlocked. In Australia, carriers unlock phones for free once the plan's conditions are met. Phones bought outright from Apple, Google, Samsung or a retailer are unlocked.
