# How much data do I need?

> What a day of maps, messaging, social and video uses, and how to pick a plan you won't run out of.

Most travellers use between 500 MB and 1.5 GB a day. Where you land in that range depends almost entirely on video.

## What things use

| Activity | Roughly |
| ------------------------------------------ | ------------------- |
| Messaging (WhatsApp, iMessage, text) | Almost nothing |
| Maps and navigation | 5–10 MB per hour |
| Web browsing and email | 50–100 MB per hour |
| Social media scrolling | 100–200 MB per hour |
| Music streaming | 60–150 MB per hour |
| Video calls | 300–600 MB per hour |
| Video streaming (YouTube, Netflix, TikTok) | 1–3 GB per hour |
| Uploading photos | 3–5 MB each |

## Pick a plan

* **Light** (maps, messaging, a bit of browsing, photos over Wi-Fi at night): about **500 MB a day**.
* **Typical** (all of the above plus social media and the odd video): about **1 GB a day**.
* **Heavy** (streaming, video calls home, hotspotting a laptop): **2 GB a day** or more.

Multiply by your days and add a buffer. If you're between two sizes, the bigger plan is usually cheaper than a second plan later, and if the plan is reloadable you can [top up](/managing/top-up) mid-trip anyway.

## Ways to use less

* Download maps, playlists and shows over hotel Wi-Fi before you head out.
* Turn off automatic photo backup and app updates on mobile data.
* On iPhone, **Low Data Mode** on the Roamly line; on Android, **Data Saver**.
* Keep an eye on your plan page: it shows your average per day and a forecast. See [Check your data usage](/managing/data-usage).
